FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS ENDODONTIC TREATMENT?
When the nerve of a tooth dies, bacteria can start to multiply inside of it. Ultimately, our bodies will begin to reject the dead nerve inside the tooth, which can lead to pain. An infection like tooth decay can cause the tooth to become hypersensitive to cold, heat or pressure.
A root canal with one of our highly trained family dentists can help you to preserve your tooth instead of needing to have it extracted.
WHY DO I NEED ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
A root canal is needed when the soft tissue inside your tooth, called the pulp, becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures. If left untreated, this can cause severe pain, swelling, and even lead to an abscess or tooth loss. Root canal treatment removes the infection, relieves discomfort, and preserves your natural tooth, preventing the need for extraction. With modern techniques, the procedure is comfortable and highly effective in restoring your tooth’s function and health.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON CAUSES OF ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
There are a number of factors that can cause the death and infection of a tooth. These include:
- Deep decay that is left untreated
- Repeated dental procedures on a tooth
- Cracks and holes that is left untreated
- Trauma to the face and jaw
HOW IS ROOT CANAL PERFORMED?
Root canal therapy treats the tooth from the inside out. During the procedure, one of our experienced dentists will remove the infection and medicate the inside of the tooth. We will then fill the chamber to seal off the nerve canal. Usually, it is recommended that a crown that be placed over the tooth so that it does not break.
The process typically takes 2 to 3 visits and will need additional appointment for crown placement.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T GET ROOT CANAL?
Without root canal treatment, the infection inside of your tooth could spread to elsewhere in the body. What may look like a small abscess on your gums could indeed cause far greater health complications, including damage to the bone around your teeth.
ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES TO ROOT CANAL?
If a root canal is not an option or preferred, the main alternative is tooth extraction, where the damaged tooth is removed entirely. After extraction, you may need a replacement option such as:
- Dental Implant – A permanent solution that replaces the tooth with an artificial root and crown
- Dental Bridge – Uses adjacent teeth to support a false tooth, filling the gap
- Partial Denture – A removable option to restore function and appearance
However, saving your natural tooth with a root canal is usually the best choice for maintaining your bite, function, and oral health. Your dentist will discuss the best option based on your individual needs.
IS ROOT CALA TREATMENT PAINFUL?
While root canal treatments have a reputation for being painful, advancements in dentistry means that this procedure is no more painful than having a filling placed.
