FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT ARE DENTAL FILLINGS?
Dental fillings are materials used to restore a tooth damaged by decay. The decayed portion of the tooth is removed, and the cavity is filled with a material to restore the tooth’s shape, function, and strength.
Whether your tooth has decayed, worn down, or eroded, we use the latest materials to rebuild and strengthen it. As an amalgam-free practice, we use white filling materials that blend seamlessly with your existing tooth structure, making it virtually unnoticeable.
All restorative treatments are performed in our modern, relaxing clinic, where you can enjoy Netflix or Stan during your appointment for a stress-free experience.
WHAT IS TOOTH DECAY?
Tooth decay is the damage to a tooth caused by bacteria producing acids that break down the enamel. It starts as a small cavity and can worsen if untreated, leading pain, infection, or tooth loss. Prevent it with good oral hygiene, a healthy diet and regular dental check-up and cleans.
WHAT TYPE OF DENTAL FILLINGS ARE AVAILABLE?
Depending on the cavity size, we can use either white resin or porcelain fillings. White resin fillings are preferred for their minimally invasive nature, as they bond naturally to enamel and reduce the risk of breaking or recurrent decay. Porcelain fillings are custom-made for larger areas of damage while preserving the tooth’s structure.
WHAT ABOUT METAL FILLINGS?
Old amalgam (metal) fillings have a tendency to gradually contribute to the tooth cracking apart over time. They also require that healthy tooth structure is removed to keep the filling in place. If you have an old mercury filling that needs to be changed out, a porcelain filling or crown may be your next step.
HOW LONG DO DENTAL FILLINGS LAST?
The longevity of dental fillings can vary depending on various factors, including the type of filling material used, the size and location of the filling, and your oral hygiene habits.
On average, dental fillings can last several years to over a decade with proper care. Regular dental check-ups can help detect any signs of wear or deterioration and ensure timely replacement if necessary.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER HAVING FILLINGS?
After a dental filling, it’s common to experience some mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure for a few days—sometimes up to a couple of weeks. Your mouth may still feel numb for a few hours due to the local anesthesia. Once the numbness wears off, you might notice slight soreness in the area or along your jaw, especially if your mouth was open for an extended period.
If your bite feels “off” or uncomfortable once the numbness fades, contact your dentist—it may need a quick adjustment. Most patients return to normal eating and brushing habits the same day. However, it’s a good idea to avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours, especially if you received a silver (amalgam) filling.
If you experience sharp pain, swelling, or discomfort that lasts longer than a few days, contact your dentist for a follow-up.
