FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHEN SHOULD I START BRUSHING MY CHILD'S TEETH?
As soon as their first tooth appears! Use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush and water until age 2, then introduce fluoride toothpaste.
HOW CAN I PREVENT CAVITIES IN MY CHILD'S TEETH?
Encourage regular brushing, flossing, a healthy diet, and routine dental check-ups. Fluoride treatments and dental sealants can also help protect their teeth.
WHAT IS FLUORIDE, AND IS IT SAFE FOR CHILDREN?
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and prevents decay. It’s safe in recommended amounts, such as fluoride toothpaste and tap water.
WHAT ARE DENTAL SEALANTS, AND DOES MY CHILD NEED THEM?
Dental sealants are thin coatings applied to molars to prevent cavities. They’re especially helpful for kids prone to decay.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CHILD KNOCKS OUT A TOOTH?
If it’s a baby tooth, don’t try to put it back—visit us to check for damage. If it’s a permanent tooth, place it in milk or saliva and see a dentist immediately.
ARE THUMB-SUCKING AND PACIFIERS BAD FOR CHILDREN?
Prolonged thumb-sucking or pacifier use beyond age 3–4 can affect teeth alignment and bite development.
YOUR CHILD'S FIRST DENTAL VISIT
We recommend bringing your child for check-ups as soon as their first tooth erupts or by two years old. Our team ensures a positive, fun experience while guiding you on how to protect their smile.
ORTHODONTIC EARLY INTERVENTION IMPORTANCE?
We understand the importance and benefit of correcting the bite before reaching adulthood.
Having a balanced and stable bite will provide comfort and protection to the teeth, jaw joints and head and neck muscles throughout life.
A child will grow 20 baby teeth in their childhood lifetime by the time they are 3-4 years old.
This is subject to change as each child has a different growth rate, meaning some teeth may be quicker or slower at growing than others. This is the same for when the baby tooth is due to fall out.
The chart below shows the name of each tooth. These names (as written on the right side of the image) are the same on both sides of the mouth. The information underneath indicates at what month the child’s baby tooth erupts and at what year the child loses that tooth.
WHY ARE SPORT MOUTH GUARDS IMPORTANT?
Is your child part of a sports team or involved in individual athletics? A custom-fitted mouthguard can significantly reduce the risk of dental injuries during activities. At Dental Care Glebe, our experienced dentists have handled numerous dental emergencies, and a fitted appliance can help spare you pain and discomfort.
Which Type of Sports Mouthguard Should I Wear?
Over-the-counter mouthguards are often loose and bulky, offering limited protection. In contrast, a custom-made mouthguard stays securely in place and protects against concussions, broken or knocked-out teeth, and lip lacerations. To create your custom guard, we’ll take an impression of your teeth, ensuring a comfortable fit. We can also adjust the thickness and colour to suit your preferences.
